And how does Cyrillic romanization deal with Pinyin 'cu' and 'qu' if the same letter 'ц' is used for both 'c' and 'q'? I guess I could look at the Wikipedia article that JSG suggested. But very often in non-specialist texts the apostrophe or acute accent mark is dropped, especially in proper names, to make the transliteration more "reader-friendly" hence we get Gogol, Yeltsin, and Lvov. Gogol', L'vov, Yel'tsin or Jel'cin or Iel'tsin or El'tsin, and bez bel'ya ) in all these cases this represents the Cyrillic spelling ль (l + "soft sign"): Гоголь, Львов, Ельцин, без белья. September 17, 12:42 F – Virtually all romanizations of Russian use l' for palatalized l when it comes at the end of a word or before a consonant or an iotized vowel (e.g. September 17, 12:03 – Apparently (with usual caveats re: Wikipedia), "сы". Wait, if си is used for Pinyin xi, how do they write the sound of Pinyin "si"? Which romanization is it that uses l' for a palatalized l sound? I see that used often for surnames. Filed by Victor Mair under Writing systems.(A tip of the hat to Rostislav Berezkin for help with the Cyrillic also to Zev Handel, David Branner, and Mark Swofford for assistance with the IPA.) Here are a couple of typical examples, with the Russian hovering somewhere between a transcription from Chinese and a transliteration from Uyghur: Romanization The challenges are even greater when one is striving to recover, for example, an original Uyghur or other non-Sinitic name that was transcribed into Chinese characters and then transcribed from characters into Cyrillic.Īttempting to go backward in that chain of transcriptions - Cyrill(ic)ized Chinese → Chinese characters → Uyghur has caused me much hair-whitening grief. Trying to navigate between Cyrill(ic)ized Mandarin and pinyin or other Romanization so that one can figure out what the original characters were is often enormously perplexing. Note that Wade-Giles is closer to IPA than either pinyin or Cyrillized Mandarin.) (IPA specialists may have some suggestions for improvement. Here I shall give just a few examples of how different Cyrill(ic)ization of Mandarin is from pinyin Romanization: Russian Cyrill(ic)ization Although it apparently works well enough for Russian Sinologists who grow up with it and receive their training exclusively through this system, Russian Cyrill(ic)ization constitutes a bit of a nightmare for those who are not accustomed to its special features. More of a headache than the lack of an official romanization for Russian itself, however, are the idiosyncrasies of the Russian Cyrill(ic)ization of Mandarin. Many people do use the Library of Congress system, but more by default than by choice. Two things plague such work more than anything else, and both have to do with transliteration.įirst of all, unlike pinyin for Chinese, there is no governmentally sanctioned, officially recognized, widely accepted system of romanization for Russian Cyrillic script. It has often been my duty to translate or edit Russian archeological and Sinological works in English. ![]() Once again, it works decently well but does lead to some strange situations. Speaking of, combat automatically swaps over to cursor mode which you can access at any time by pressing in the left stick. This happens a lot more than it should in every situation, and like I said in my BG3 Stadia preview I think a more traditional 3rd person control scheme would work miles better using the camera as a sort of “cursor”. For example, every time I tried to climb down a vine, I would accidentally talk with one of my companions instead. Anything directly in front of you that is interactable with the A button will be highlighted in white, and if there are multiple items you can swap between them with L and R.Īt least, that’s the idea – it’s a little more clunky in practice. Instead of clicking where you’d like to go, you control your character directly with the left analogue stick. If you’ve played the more recent Baldur’s Gate III Early Access by the same studio, they’re essentially the same, but more polished in a finished product. It’s clear the game was designed with a mouse and keyboard in mind, and while the gamepad menus and controls are good enough I can’t help but feel they could be better. The controls are probably the biggest issue with the game. Not great, with very long initial loading and saving times, but not bad, the visuals are still surprisingly detailed. On to the Switch port itself, in a word it’s fine. The massive scope of the game might make it more difficult to whip out on the bus for a quick session, but that’s just because there’s so much to discover you’ll want to follow the dozens of threads you’ll come across every few minutes with not enough time in a bus ride to do so. Even then, I feel like I might have left a few stones unturned or had quests conclude in different ways. Now I’ve played through this section several times on PC, but I still found new quests and locations this time around. When people say even two or three multiple playthroughs of this easily 100 hour epic won’t be enough to see everything, they mean it.Īs an example, I spent about 17 hours in what’s supposed to be the tutorial area. ![]() It’s rare for a game to give you choices that actually matter, but Divinity has them in abundance. You can be a goody-two-shoes, a right evil bastard, or anything in between or outside. Each side quest (more or less) presents its own deep, complex dilemma that you can engage with in whatever way you see fit. Original Sin 2 is already starting off with a captivating premise, but it only gets more interesting from there. The world needs a Divine to hold the void at bay, but only one among you may ascend to divinity… Along the way, you discover that you’re a Godwoken: someone with the ability to become the next Divine, essentially a living god. Obviously, you don’t take kindly to being held prisoner, so you and three companions make your escape. There, the Sourcerers are collared and left to essentially fend for themselves. ![]() With the passing of the Divine, the Magisters have been rounding up any and all people who can use Source magic to ship them off to Fort Joy. So let’s get straight to the Source, and dive right in. With the rerelease of the physical, Limited Run game cart on Switch, we thought it would be fun to take one last look at the game, particularly focusing on this console version. Said definitive edition added new story elements, dialogue options, characters, and generally improved the overall balancing. Essentially, it’s only flaw is that it has so much to it the game can be overwhelming. Our own Editor in Chief gave the non-definitive edition a 95, and I completely agree with his opinion. I think it’s safe to say that Divinity: Original Sin 2 is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. ![]() It is a huge drop off towards irrelevance in the eyes of the mainstream gamer after Riven, and I think it is partly due to the way Riven alienated more casual players with the length of time and the degree of patience required to legitimately solve it. ![]() Myst had 6.5 million copies sold, in its initial form, Riven came fairly close to 5 million, and no Myst game post Riven even quite hit the 2 million sales mark as far as I know. I actually have argued that while Riven is the pinnacle of the Myst series in many ways, it also might (sadly) have been the single biggest reason the series later died. But - and I have discussed this elsewhere - it is very, and I mean almost legendarily, difficult to beat. The attention to detail is exceptional, worldbuilding, art, sound and music design, and environmental storytelling are all outstanding. Setting aside the narrative aspects that are aided by a wider awareness of the canon, though: Almost every book of any kind relating to this series is physical only, out of print, spiraling upwards in price and is essentially a collector's item by now. It really irks me that Cyan hasn't made the Myst novels available in ebook form on Kindle, or other Myst related books generally. Note, Riven is somewhat more comprehensible as a story if you've played Myst first, and even more cohesive if you have read the Myst novel 'Book of Atrus' which fills in a lot of additional narrative background prior to Myst and Riven.

Three years on from the first lockdown, the charity has seen demand for its Zoom sessions lessen, but delivering in this way means it can still reach participants in areas where they cannot access this kind of service. “Often, it is simply a case that this type of inclusive, disability-led activity is just not available in their local area.” ![]() Its managing director, Julie Nicholson, has found that this has helped widen the charity’s horizons.ĭigital service delivery has helped her charity engage people who are isolated, as well as “people without transport, people without enough support and people who are still shielding, in the comfort and safety of their own homes”, she says.
